what is hypnotherapy?
What hypnotherapy is
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that makes use of your mind’s most receptive level of awareness. In this state, we can help you to process fears, anxieties and negative behaviours and overcome them.
We enter this awareness state quite naturally; when driving a car, watching TV, daydreaming. We recognise it afterwards, when we suddenly realise we’ve been focusing on something totally unrelated to our activity.
The REM phase during sleep is another example, when the mind is busy processing information and experiences. Memories are transferred from the subconscious to the conscious mind, turning from emotions to a rational narrative that helps us to deal with life events.
Hypnotherapy encourages this natural mental process which is vital for maintaining a healthy mind.
What hypnotherapy is not
No one can take control of your mind or actions but yourself.
There are no crystals, pocket watches or magic wands and I do not touch a client; I simply talk, using positive mental imagery, while you relax.
What happens on The Yellow Couch?
Consistency is the key to getting lasting results. Every one of your hour-long sessions would be at the same time each week and follow a simple, three step process.
- Setting the scene – You relax on the yellow couch while I explain how your mind works and why you are in your current situation. Repeating this helps you to internalise this information and create a new mind-set.
- Positive suggestion – You move to the therapy chair where you feel comfortable and secure. I take you to a more receptive frame of mind where conscious and subconscious are in tune and we can explore positive suggestions to overcome the blocks in your life. You may remain aware of your surroundings, you may doze or even fall asleep and that’s fine. Your subconscious continues to explore the scenario we create.
- Processing – Finally, I ask you to come back from your receptive state so that your mind remains calm and you feel relaxed and refreshed. Over the next week, your brain will absorb those suggestions that contribute to positive changes in your mind-set and behaviour.
See your own stress lowering
Throughout the session we monitor your stress levels using a Galvanic Skin Response monitor so that you see the change in your own stress level when you experience therapy. Many clients continue coming back, after we’ve dealt with any mental blocks, because an hour with The Yellow Couch makes them feel more relaxed and positive.
